One of the most exhaustive works on organ building in the pre-Romantic age. It was commissioned by the Académie Royale des Sciences as part of its survey of all the manufacturing skills and crafts of France, and took 12 years to write. The author was a Benedictine monk, and one of the foremost organ-builders of his age. He built an organ for the church of St. Croix in Bordeaux in 1748 (now in the cathedral of St. André), and it is this organ and the one in the Jesuit church in the rue St. Antoine in Paris, that he uses as models throughout the book.
