Ensayo del lote

Bearing a Bristol-board cover, this notebook contains approximately thirty-five pencil studies, several of which use both sides of the sheet. Landscape studies comprise the majority collection, numbering thirty. The remainder consists of two portraits, two figure studies, and a carousel scene.
Five of the drawings relate to fully-realized paintings, each recorded in the second and third volumes of J. and H. Dauberville's Bonnard, catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint. These drawings relate to Le berger et le chien (Location unknown; D. 864), with some departures from the finished painting, and to Trois personnages au pied d'un arbre (Private collection; D. 904). They also relate to Sous-bois ou Sentier de forêt (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; D. 983), which likewise shows variations, and to Le toit rouge which will be offered in Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale, New York, 18 November 2026, lot 386 (D. 1176).
