Ensayo del lote

Born in Jackson, California, in 1869, Joseph Raphael initially studied at the San Francisco School of Design before settling in Europe for further training. After attending the Académie Julian in Paris, he split his time between France and Laren, an artist colony near Amsterdam until, upon the occasion of his marriage, he moved to Belgium. The present work is characteristic of Raphael's idiosyncratic style of Impressionism, dominated by a heavy impasto and bright, mosaic-like coloration.
