Ensayo del lote

Untitled Film Still #8 belongs to Cindy Sherman’s celebrated series Untitled Film Stills, a group of sixty-nine black-and-white photographs made between 1977 and 1980 that established the artist as one of the defining voices of her generation. Drawing on the visual language of 1950s and 1960s Hollywood, film noir, B movies and European art-house cinema, Sherman adopts the familiar conventions of the movie still while withholding any fixed narrative. Lighting, cropping, camera angle, costume, and gesture all suggest a story already underway, yet the image remains suspended in an indeterminate moment.

Ambiguity is central to the series. Sherman did not set out to recreate particular films or characters, but instead constructed women who seem instantly recognizable without ever becoming fully identifiable. As she later recalled, the images she preferred were those that appeared to fall “in-between the action,” moments in which a woman might be alone, watched, followed, arriving somewhere or leaving something behind (C. Sherman, “The Making of Untitled,” in The Complete Untitled Film Stills, New York, 2003, p. 9). Similarly, the series depends upon keeping setting, body language, and expression open enough to sustain multiple possible narratives in each image.

In Untitled Film Still #8, as throughout the series, Sherman is both author and performer, yet the image is not a self-portrait in any conventional sense. Instead, she inhabits a type shaped by the visual codes of popular culture. The photographs evoke the ingénue, the working woman, the vamp, the lonely housewife, and other stock female roles, exposing how readily identity can be constructed through costume, pose, and cinematic convention.

The tension of the Untitled Film Stills lies precisely in the collision between familiarity and uncertainty. Their protagonists seem to belong to films we feel we have seen, but no such films exist. The works therefore operate less as fragments of specific narratives than as distillations of the images through which femininity has been repeatedly pictured and codified. Created at the outset of Sherman’s career, Untitled Film Still #8 already contains the concerns that would remain central to her practice for decades: performance, masquerade, representation, and the instability of the photographic image.
