Arashiyama, located near the imperial capital of Kyoto, was historically a favored destination for court nobles to enjoy the autumn foliage. By Hiroshige’s time, however, it had become a popular destination for aristocrats and commoners alike, celebrated for both its autumn colors and spring cherry blossoms. In this print, Hiroshige once again demonstrates his talent for unconventional composition. The river cuts diagonally upward across the image like a broad band, leaving its center largely open, while the boats, drifting smoke, cherry trees, and even the mountain path reinforce this rising diagonal. The composition give the picture a sense of movement, transforming a tranquil, static landscape into a dynamic one. Similar compositional devices can also be seen in his other prints (lot 145).
