A wagtail perches atop a tall wooden pile in the Sumida River at Mukojima, with the busy riverside landscape of Edo extending into the distance. Its sharply raised tail creates an unusually elongated, almost calligraphic form that echoes the verticality of the wooden piles and is particularly effective within the narrow tanzaku format.
The distant Matsuchiyama Honryuin Temple further anchors the scene in the local landscape. According to tradition, sacred Mount Matsuchiyama rose miraculously from the earth, whereupon a golden dragon descended from heaven and encircled the mountain to protect it. Hiroshige may have drawn upon this legend in a playful mitate, transforming the wagtail perched upon the wooden pile into a humorous visual counterpart to the heavenly dragon associated with Matsuchiyama. The relationship between the small bird, towering pile, and sacred landscape gives the composition both wit and poetic resonance.
