Probably executed during Caruelle d’Aligny’s second stay in Italy in 1834, this large-scale drawing depicts the Sanctuary of La Verna in Tuscany, traditionally associated with Saint Francis of Assisi. Tuscan views are relatively uncommon within the artist’s œuvre, which was principally focused on the landscapes of Rome and Naples and their surrounding regions.
