Gilbert James Heathcote-Drummond-Willougby, 3rd Earl of Ancaster (1907-1983); Christie's, London, 20 October 1972, lot 66, as 'G. de Lairesse', where acquired by the father of the present owners.

The figure of Saint John the Evangelist, flanked by an eagle and holding a quill, is rendered with a greater degree of individuality than the other three evangelists. His outward gaze, reminiscent of a self-portrait, suggests an association between the painting’s unidentified artist and his namesake saint.
