Among Thomas Hart Benton's many inspirations, the small Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard had a significant impact on the artist’s defining style. Here, the artist skillfully depicts a moment of quiet in the woods of Chilmark, focusing on four yellow mushrooms in the foreground—the namesake for the present composition. In the process of capturing such a special place, Benton employs his instantly recognizable, yet decidedly Modern style, complete with bold color and sinuous natural forms that reflect the artist's profound fondness for the landscape he immersed himself in.
