PETER BIRMANN, VIEW OF TIVOLI, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, WATERCOLOUR, IN A SIMULATED MOUNT, SIGNED, LOCATED AND DATED '1786'

A pupil of Johann Rudolf Huber in Basel and later of Johann Ludwig Aberli in Bern, Birmann worked between 1781 and 1790 in Rome with Louis Ducros and Giovanni Volpato, and was strongly influenced by Jakob Philipp Hackert's views and landscapes. Upon his return to Basel, he founded a publishing house specialising in views of Switzerland. Élève de Johann Rudolf Huber à Bâle, puis de Johann Ludwig Aberli à Berne, Birmann travailla entre 1781 et 1790 à Rome avec Louis Ducros et Giovanni Volpato, et fut fortement influencé par les vues et les paysages de Jakob Philipp Hackert. À son retour à Bâle, il fonda une maison d'édition spécialisée dans les vues de la Suisse. Pour deux aquarelles de l'artiste représentant des vues d'Italie, dont une Vue du Forum romain datée de 1781, voir Peter und Samuel K. Katz et al., Peter und Samuel Birmann.
