This gem-like painting by Euan Uglow plays on the conventions of still life with the artist’s characteristically dry humour. Titled Half an Apple with 50p, it portrays exactly that: half a green apple, possibly a Granny Smith, and a shiny silver coin. The title proves disarmingly literal.

The work relishes its own minimalism. Set against a deep teal background, the two objects are presented as infinitely attractive and almost appetising. The compact scale of this oil painting only amplifies its precious character, giving this small still life the quality of an exquisite jewel.

It contains all the familiar hallmarks of Uglow’s style, including the small measuring marks that have become part of the iconography of his oeuvre. Savouring the simply stylish things in life, Half an Apple with 50p celebrates the enduring appeal of still life, rendered with a quintessentially British candour and flair.
