Prior to this show, Dylan had only played as a headliner in clubs, with the exception of one other appearance billed as a concert at Carnegie Charter Hall, a smaller side room off the main venue, with only around 50 people attending. This concert on 12 April, 1963 was Dylan's first solo concert in a large venue and the first time that Dylan devoted the show to his original compositions, with the exception of one song. This show took place just before the release of Dylan’s second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, the album that saw Dylan find his voice as a singer-songwriter and saw the start of his huge success. A larger format handbill was also produced to promote this concert but this is the only known example of the smaller handbill extant.
