If we rely on the published shop ledgers of John D’Angelico, 409 Excel model guitars were built between about 1935 to 1960, making it the most popular model D’Angelico produced. Of this number only 85 are listed as Cutaway until June of 1957 when the nomenclature Cutaway disappears. With the solid preference of the cutaway-body among jazz guitarists, by the mid-50s it would be safe to assume that all or most subsequent Excels were cutaways. This example, number 1835, was delivered on March 4, 1950, and sold to the name Fariello.
