This intimate devotional panel depicting the Holy Family is one of several variants attributed to Ambrosius Benson that derive from models developed by Benson's teacher, Gerard David (1460-1523). The Virgin tenderly supports the Christ Child with her left arm, while her right hand holds a three-budded white rose, a symbol of the Trinity. Jesus cups his mother's chin, his eyes gazing upwards into hers. Behind them, Joseph eats from a bowl of milk soup.

We are grateful to Till-Holger Borchert for proposing the attribution on the basis of digital images (written communication, 14 February 2022).
