The daughter of an engraver, Susan Macdowell Eakins painted from a young age and attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She married eminent American painter Thomas Eakins in 1884, and the pair each held a studio in their Philadelphia home. Known primarily for her portraiture, such as the present work, Susan Eakins' paintings are in numerous institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania.
