A self-taught artist, Arthur Clifton Goodwin learned to paint by studying the work of contemporary American Impressionists, such as Maurice Prendergast. "Goodwin's artistic career derived impetus from the popularity of early canvases like On South Boston Pier. They display a delicate, light palette and evoke a certain sentimentality in their bourgeois portrayals of urban life." (R. Eliot-Ramsey, A.C.
