The present work depicts Ms. Helen Dixon of Philadelphia. The portrait was likely commissioned by the sitter’s father upon her introduction into Philadelphia society. According to Ronald G. Pisano, the present work was loaned to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1923 by the sitter and her husband, Dr. Edward Bell Kumbhaar (William Merritt Chase: Portraits in Oil, New Haven, Connecticut, 2006, vol. II, p. 206).
