Mount Chocorua

Born in Tarrytown, New York, Albertus del Orient Browere was the son of sculptor John Henri Isaac Browere, who created life masks for eminent historical figures, including Thomas Jefferson. After studying at the National Academy of Design, Browere settled in Catskill, New York, where he honed his skill as a landscape painter. The present work depicts New Hampshire's iconic peak, Mount Chocorua, which captured the attention of many Hudson River School painters. Here, Browere places the scene below a glimmering pink sky, devoid of human presence, suggesting the grandeur of the untapped American terrain.
