The present work is one of seven oils entitled Promenade on the Seashore. According to Nancy Mowll Mathews, when exhibiting "at the National Arts Club in 1904, he did not submit the New York watercolors, but entered seven oil studies of beach scenes...While these studies of sea and clouds...contrasted with the portrait and figure studies shown by Henri, Luks, Glackens, Sloan, and Davies, Prendergast was not considered an outsider...Prendergast at this point was considered as important and influential in New York as Henri." (Maurice Prendergast, Williamstown, Massachusetts, 1990, p. 20)
