A study for one of the figures in Danse dans un pavillon, a painting in the collection of Frederick the Great at Charlottenburg (inv. GK I 4186; Tavener Holmes, op. cit., no. 55). In the drawing Lancret took great care to depict the pleading expression on the kneeling man’s face; in the painting he is asking a woman to dance. In the sale catalogue of 1964 (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 6 November 1964, lot 64) the drawing on the verso had been connected to Lancret’s Le moulinet devant la charmille (Schloss Charlottenburg, inv. GK I 4188), which is a pendant to Danse dans un pavillon.

We are grateful to Mary Tavener Holmes for confirming the attribution of this sheet on the basis of photographs and for assisting with the cataloguing.
