THE LOUIS XV TASTE (LOTS 205-207)The following three lots have long been thought to be part of a second Chinese export dinner service ordered for Louis XV. Though they relate closely to the previous two lots, differences can be seen in the scale of the Order of Saint-Esprit, which impales the bolder iron-red border at the footrims, as well as in the lack of colorful enameling on the lotus devices. Some are now calling the dating and manufacture of this ‘second’ service into question, and believe this second service was made by Samson in 19th century France. All five of the present lots were tested using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and the elemental components in the clay and blue enamels were found to be nearly identical on both the two lots acknowledged to be of Chinese manufacture from the 'first' service as well as the three lots from the 'second' service.
