A FRENCH ROYAL DINNER SERVICE (LOTS 203 AND 204)The present large wine cooler and the charger that follows are part of a much debated Chinese export dinner service believed to have been ordered for Louis XV in the early 18th century, with various scholars dating the service from as early as 1715 to as late as 1738. Both pieces have the arms of France to the center, and notably the cavetto of the charger and rim of the cooler include addorsed L’s for Louis, one of his preferred emblems. The service is recorded as descending through the Orléans side of Louis XV’s family until it was gifted to a French noble family by Charles X circa 1830. Other examples from the service have come to market on occasion, including the charger in the Benjmain F. Edwards III Collection, sold at Christie’s, New York, 20 January 2004, lot 147 ($71,700); a pair of jars and covers from the Collection of Khalil Rizk, sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 25 April 2008, lot 4 ($61,000); and a bidet in the Dalva Brothers collection, sold at Christie’s, New York, 22 October 2020, lot 150 ($21,250).
