First edition in contemporary binding by royal bookbinder Antoine-Michel Padeloup; the Hamilton Palace copy, later owned by British Prime Minister Archibald Primrose.
The work the depicts the festivities given by the city of Strasbourg to celebrate the visit of Louis XV in 1744. After suffering a high fever while leading his armies at Metz, Louis XV was welcomed into Strasbourg by twelve hundred cavalrymen and infantrymen to the sound of timpani, trumpets, oboes, hunting horns and other instruments. The festivities continued for several days, and to immortalize the occasion François-Joseph de Klinglin, the royal moneylender in Strasbourg, commissioned the creation of this magnificent album.
Louis XV had a number of copies specially bound by his Royal Binder Padeloup for presentation to members of his court, in either polished calf or red morocco and elaborately decorated in gold. Cohen-Ricci, 870; Berlin Kat. 3015.
Binding: the original binding by Antoine-Michel Padeloup, signed with his engraved ticket at bottom of the engraved title-page, red morocco tooled in gold, arms of Louis XV on covers, frame of alternating fleurs-de-lys and palmettes, royal cyphers and additional ornaments in spine compartments, edges gilt.
Large folio (625 × 458mm). Engraved title by Marvye, engraved portrait of Louis XV by Wille after Parrocel, 11 double-page engraved views by J.-P. le Bas after Weis, 10 leaves of engraved text (spotting, some leaves toned, scratch on pl. 9 affecting one letter, small hole in pl. 9). Contemporary red morocco tooled in gold by Padeloup (rebacked, light scratches, rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: William Beckford (1760–1844; Hamilton Palace sale, Sotheby’s, London, 12 July 1883, lot 2278) – Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, British Prime Minister (1847–1929; bookplate).
