Painted around 1842, the present work demonstrates Robert Havell, Jr.'s skill in oil. While he was primarily known for his etchings, works such as West Point from Fort Putnam emphasize his mastery of color and exacting topographical detail. Based upon his field sketches of the area, this pleasant Hudson River view features Bannerman's Island in the central background.

This lot is accompanied by a related sketch and aquatint engraving by the artist.
