The present pastel was executed by Remington circa 1903 over a printed halftone of his frontispiece illustration for his novel John Ermine of the Yellowstone. First executed in oil (Private Collection) around 1902, the work depicts the story's protagonist, a white man raised by a Crow Indian tribe. Throughout the novel, Ermine must grapple with the conflicts of living between two cultures as he navigates his experiences in the military and in his romantic endeavors.
