Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot was a popular painter of landscapes, village scenes and moral allegories, based in Utrecht, where he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1616 and worked until his death in 1666. His cheerful village scenes, with spirited feasting, games and dancing, such as the present work, were much influenced by the tradition of Flemish genre and landscape painting.
