This elegant chair, with its deeply curving back and swiveling action, relates to the celebrated example acquired together with a cylinder bureau by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire in 1785, possibly directly from Roentgen's workshop, both of which remain at Chatsworth House (see W. Koeppe et al. Extravagant Inventions: The Princely Furniture of the Roentgens, exh. cat., New York, 2012, pp. 168-169, cat. no. 4).
