AZERBAIJAN, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY

Woven in the mountainous region surrounding Lake Urmia in northern Azerbaijan, this Kurdish runner has distinctive ornamentation which take their cue from 18th century Caucasian carpets, such as the late 17th/early 18th century 'Blossom' carpet in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (acc.no.53.156). Characteristics of these Kurdish weavings are their saturated colour palettes of brilliant colours woven with a high-quality wool (James D. Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan. A Historical Legacy of Woven Art, London, 2002, p.111).
