Filiz Yenişehirlioğlu refers to tiles of this type, which covered the windows of the octagon from the exterior, as being amongst the most characteristic part of the Dome of the Rock revetments (Filiz Yenişehirlioğlu, 'Tile Samples from the Dome of the Rock and their 20th Century Reproductions' in Tadeusz Majda (ed.), Seventh International Congress of Turkish Art, Warsaw, 1990, p.275, fig.13, inv.349).
