Double-gourd vases are also known as dajiping 'vase of good fortune', as the double gourd, or bottle gourd, symbolizes fertility and good fortune. The shape and color of the glaze of the present vase and others like it appear to be a Qing interpretation of earlier Longquan celadon double-gourd vases of Song-dynasty date.
The form was popular in the 18th century, particularly in the Qianlong period. A celadon-glazed Qianlong-period example with Qianlong mark and original cover was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 November 2016, lot 3327. In the 19th century, potters created examples like the present vase to emulate the earlier versions, while imperial examples were also being produced.
