The shape of this glass vase takes its inspiration from blue and white porcelain vases of gu form, such as those produced during the mid-17th century. Compare the vase of this type illustrated by M. Butler et al., Treasures from an unknown Reign: Shunzhi Porcelain, 1644-1661, Alexandria, Virginia, 2002, p. 187, no. 55. The decoration of the present vase was also probably inspired by the narrative military scenes found on blue and white porcelain vases during the 17th century, which were themselves drawn from popular novels and operas.
