"One cannot remain indifferent to these images; yet one never succumbs to the illusion that these are real human entities. As subjects, they have no psychological presence; as objects, their physical volume is reduced to a flattened skin pinioned to the canvas. Nonetheless, they elicit a violently physical response," (M.
