The seal face is carved with an eight-character inscription in relief, reading Xingyouheng tang shending zhenji, ‘Authentic work appraised by the Hall of Constancy”. Hall of Constancy was the hall name of Zai Quan (1794-1854), a grandson of the Emperor Qianlong, and a famous collector during the Daoguang period. One side of the seal also bears an attributed signature of Yuxuan, who was active during the mid-17th century known for his soapstone carvings.

The impression of the present seal can be found on a number of paintings, including Zhao Mengfu’s Preface for Sending Qin Shaozhang to Lin’an in the Shanghai Museum; an album painted by Shen Zhou in the style of Wu Zhen, recorded in Shiqu baoji chubian, vol. 2, pp. 753-754, sold at Beijing Poly, 2013, lot 3727; and an album of twelve leaves by Jiang Tingxi, recorded in Shiqu baoji chubian, vol. 2, pp. 763-764, sold at China Guardian, 2012, lot 1685. For the complete list of paintings and publications where the impression seal is found, please refer to www.christies.com.cn.
