The seal face is carved with a six-character inscription Yuci Langyinge bao, ‘Treasure of the Langyin Pavilion, imperially bestowed’. The Langyin Pavilion was the name of the studio bestowed by the Kangxi Emperor to his fourth son, Prince Yinzhen, who later became the Yongzheng Emperor.
According to the research by Guo Fuxiang of the Palace Museum, Beijing, the Yongzheng Emperor had around 253 imperial seals, but only 177 of them are included in the Album of Impressions of the Qing-dynasty Emperors and Empresses’ Seals. 14 of these seals are carved with the same inscription as the present seal, though in different sizes and script styles. Although the present seal is not recorded in the Album of Impressions of the Qing-dynasty Emperors and Empresses’ Seals, the style of the carving of inscription on the present seal compares favourably to those recorded in the Album of Impressions of the Qing-dynasty Emperors and Empresses’ Seals.
