The doucai technique was highly renowned in the Chenghua period, when it was mostly used on smaller wares, such as the legendary ‘chicken’ cup. The revival of the technique in the eighteenth century saw a burst of creative energy and an increased production of wares, both large and small, in doucai enamels. A similar bowl with a Qianlong mark from the McElney Collection was included in the exhibition, Porcelain of the High Qing, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1983, no. 79.
