SCHAEFFER, Jacob Christian (1718-1790)
Icones insectorum circa Ratisbonam indigenorum. Natürlich ausgemahlte Abbildungen Regensburgischer Insecten. Regensburg: typis Breitfeldianis, [1766-1769-1779].
First edition of Schaeffer's wide-ranging work on insects, presenting 280 varieties found in the local region of Regensburg. This extensive work on lepidoptera was compiled by the clergyman and superintendent Jacob Christian Schaffer who equally studied and practised as a botanist, mycologist, entomologist and ornithologist. BM(NH) IV, p.1823; Nissen ZBI 3629.

5 parts in three volumes, quarto (278 x 215mm). Latin and German text, half-titles, dedication leaves, volumes I with mezzotint portrait of Schaeffer by Haid after G.V. Mansinger, 280 hand-coloured engraved plates after Loibel and H. Fischer by J.N. Maag, H. Bock, G.P. Trautner, J.G. Fridrich and others (very occasional finger-soiling and spotting most heavily affecting the beginning of volume III, otherwise plates very fresh and clean). Contemporary brown tree calf, spine with 6 raised bands, the second and third compartments with labels lettered in gilt, the rest with intricate foliate design in gilt, marbled edges (extremities rubbed and corners lightly bumped, foot of spine of volume I with tiny worming holes).
