With sharply carved bracket feet, this charming diminutive desk is attributed to John Chipman (1746-1819) of Salem, Massachusetts. For a similar full-size example see Christie’s, New York, 23 January 1988, lot 356. Another example is in the collection of the US Department of State (acc. 63.72.2). For further information and examples of Chipman’s work see Peter A. Louis and Donald R. Sack, “John Chipman, Cabinetmaker of Salem, Massachusetts,” The Magazine Antiques (December 1987), pp. 1318-1325.
