Conçue vers 1989, Grenouille Fontaine permet à François-Xavier Lalanne de s’essayer aux glissements métaphoriques qu’il affectionne tant : la créature vivant dans les cours d’eau en devient la source, changeant la fonction primaire de l’objet en un rituel surréaliste, un acte d’imagination. Chez l’artiste, la forme animale donne prétexte à son œuvre et l’artiste remarque d’ailleurs que « le monde animal constitue les formes les plus riches et les plus variées de la planète». Il trouve dans cet inépuisable répertoire matière à transfigurer le bestiaire courant en sculptures utilitaires fantastiques. Ces animaux imperturbables et hiératiques semblent renvoyer aux imaginaires antiques, ceux qui peuplaient les rondes de l’artiste, un temps gardien de nuit au Musée de Louvre. Mais ici, cet immobilisme n’est que façade, et à mesure que l’on s’approche, les mécaniques subtiles de son œuvre se révèlent, incitant le spectateur à ouvrir la créature, la pièce devient familière, s’affranchissant de toute distinction entre objets et beaux-arts : de sa gueule jaillit l’eau. François-Xavier réalisera tout au long de sa carrière plusieurs pièces inspirées de batraciens : tantôt fauteuils ou fontaines, comme les grenouilles peuplant le jardin personnel de Peter Marino, entourées de fleurs de lotus ou celle du Château de Chenonceau. Cette œuvre exceptionnelle, toute à la fois ludique et sensible fait rejaillir l’ensemble des influences de François-Xavier Lalanne en une pièce à la poésie parfaitement maîtrisée : « dans les œuvres des Lalannes, la fonction onirique prime toutes les autres ». (P. d'Elme, Histoire des Lalannes, Cimaise, janvier 1970, p. 68). Conceived around 1989, his Grenouille Fontaine enabled François-Xavier Lalanne to try his hand at the metaphorical shifts he was so fond of: the creature living in the watercourse becomes the actual source, changing the primary function of the object into a surrealist ritual, an act of imagination. For the artist, the animal form gives pretext to his work and he found in this inexhaustible repertoire an inspiration to transfigure the common bestiary into fantastic utilitarian sculptures. These imperturbable and hieratic animals seem to refer to antique imaginary ones, those that populated the night shifts of the artist, when he was a guard at the Louvre Museum. But here, this immobility is only a facade, and as one approaches, the subtle mechanics of his work are revealed, inciting the spectator to open up the creature—the piece becomes familiar, freeing itself from any distinction between objects and fine arts: water spouts from its mouth. Throughout his career, François-Xavier created several pieces inspired by batrachians: armchairs or fountains, such as those in Peter Marino's personal garden, lined with a comparable model of frog fountains surrounded by lotus flowers, or the one in the Château de Chenonceau. This exceptional work, both playful and sensitive, brings out all of François-Xavier Lalanne's influences in a perfectly mastered poetic piece: “In the works by the Lalanne couple, the dreamlike function takes precedence over all others.” (P. d'Elme, Histoire des Lalannes, Cimaise, January 1970, p. 68).
