This masterpiece of a mastery, object whose sole purpose is to display one’s skill, is a rare example of the skill of a compagnon carpenter, as is shown by the three mobile rings sculpted in the centre of the composition. The compass above the arrow, one of the carpenter’s most symbolic tools, represents the maker’s loyalty to the life of compagnonnage through which they acquired their skill.
