Thomas Scott was recorded as an 'upholder' who 'carried on a substantial business at 29 Ludgate Hill between 1782 and 1804' in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 48. The identical form of printed label is illustrated p.397, pl. 787. Gilbert also records that Scott was best known for his production of 'Rudd's Dressing Table' from the design illustrated in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1793, and illustrates a marked example as well as the design (ibid, pls. 785 & 786) with similarly fitted compartments as the drawer to this chest, notably, the illustrated example has the same form of dished grip to the slide.
