One of the less well known discoveries described by Hales in this famous work concerns the determination of height by the extent to which the long bones of the body grow before they become fully calcified, which he demonstrated by means of an experiment on "a half-grown Chick" (see Drummond & Wilbraham, pp. 199-200).
