PIER FRANCESCO MAZZUCCHELLI, IL MORAZZONE, PIETA
BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON BLUE PAPER, THE EDGES CUT
Known for his dramatic religious compositions and theatrical light effects, Morazzone was a favorite of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Counter-Reformation Lombardy. Executed in the artist’s typical chiaroscuro technique, this large sheet relates to Morazzone’s Deposition in the Museo Civico of Varese, painted ca. 1618 (see M. Valsecchi, Il Seicento Lombardo. Catalogo dei dipinti e delle sculture, exhib. cat., Palazzo Reale, Milan, 1974, no. 109, ill.).
