Daté 1699, notre tableau est une très belle — et précoce — représentation d'Istanbul au crépuscule du XVIIe siècle. On y découvre le palais Topkapi, résidence des Sultans de 1465 à 1856 entourée d'autres pavillons, comme le Sepetçiler Köşkü sur le bord du rivage à droite, avec sa serie d'arcades ainsi que le pavillon Yali Köskü avec ses trois minarets.
Cette composition laissant une grande place à la mer de Marmara et aux montages Uludag à gauche, se rapproche d'une grande peinture passée en vente chez Sotheby's (vente anonyme, Sotheby's, Londres, 22 avril 2015, n°166, reproduit) et qui dériverait d'une peinture exposée au musée Sabanci en 2005 (voir Image of the Turks in 17th ventury, [cat. exp.] Sakip Sabanci Museum, 2005, p. 118.).
Dated 1699, the present painting is a beautiful – and early – depiction of Istanbul as the sun set on the 17th Century. Present are the Topkapi Palace, residence of the Sultans from 1465 to 1856, surrounded by other pavilions, such as the Sepetçiler Köşkü, on the right bank of the river, with its series of arcades, and the Yali Köskü pavilion with its three minarets.
The composition, in which the Marmara Sea and the Uludag Mountains fill a considerable part of the left-hand side of the canvas, is similar to a large painting sold Sotheby’s, London, 22 April 2015, lot 166, which itself derives from a work exhibited at the Sabanci Museum in 2005 (see Image of the Turks in 17th Century, exhibition catalogue, Sakip Sabanci Museum, 2005, p. 118).
