These pieces were re-acquired at the sale by members of Sir Trevor Lawrence's family and have remained in the family since.

The form of the present vase was inspired by archaic jade ritual objects known as cong. These ritual objects have a circular core and a square exterior, and were often carved with stylised masks between horizontal registers around the corners.
