The censer has a compressed body raised on three legs and a pair of pierced and curved upright handles that flank the short neck and flat, everted rim. Whilst related bronze censers, richly splashed with gold and cast with Xuande marks on the base, are known, the present censer appears to be particularly unusual for its curving, upturned handles. For related examples with animal-mask handles and with loop handles, see R. Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, p. 27, no. 15.
