A PAIR OF QINGTIAN SEALS AND A WHITE FURONG SEAL
SIGNED QIAN SHOUTIE, REPUBLIC PERIOD
Comprised of a pair of Qingtian seals each carved with a finial in the form of a mythical animal, with a signature of Qian Shoutie on the side, and a four-character inscription on the seal face, one in intaglio reading Gao Shouzhong yin, ‘Seal of Gao Shouzhong’, the other in relief reading Feique Tianren, ‘Flying Magpie Farmer’; and a tall white furong seal carved with a finial in the form of a water buffalo and its calf, with signature of Qian Shoutie on the side and a five-character inscription on the seal face, yantian wu e sui, ‘There is not a bad year for a field of ink stones.’

Qian Shoutie (1896-1967) was a renowned painter, calligrapher, epigraphist and seal carver active during the Republic period.

Kaiankyo is the name of the residence of Japanese industrialist Takashima Kikujiro (1875-1969), who began collecting Chinese calligraphy, paintings, seals in the 1920s. In 1965, he donated 278 pieces of calligraphy and paintings from his collection to the Tokyo National Museum.
