AN EMBROIDERED YELLOW KANG COVER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The yellow satin is fully embroidered in floss silk with meandering peony sprays interspersed with narcissus, lingzhi sprigs, bats suspending wan symbols and pairs of peaches within a central rectangular border of interlocking scrolls repeated at each corner. The cover is worked out in shades of white, blue, green and ochre, with a golden yellow silk lining woven with quatrefoil cloud designs.

Madame Christian Rowe Thornett was the daughter of successful tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist Sir Hugh Dixon and Lady Emma Elizabeth Dixson nee Shaw (1844-1922).

This panel is replete with wishes for longevity, as the lingzhi sprigs, bats, wan symbols and pairs of peaches are all symbols of longevity. These symbols combine with peony may suggest fugui changshou, 'May there be wealth and longevity'.
