First edition, ads at front dated March 1, 1850. In spite of the the controversial subject matter, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success. 2,500 copies were sold in its first week of publication, lifting Hawthorne out of literary obscurity.
8vo. Title printed in red and black. Original brown blind-embossed cloth (slight toning, a few shallow scratches on front cover).
