A painted bronze set of scales from the 1956 Paramount film The Ten Commandments, the terminal modelled in the form of Anubis (missing weights, indicator arrow and asp decorations) -- 36¾in. (93.4cm.) high -- the scale is seen in Moses' [Charlton Heston] pavilion on the site of the city he builds for the Pharaoh Sethi; accompanied by a still of Cecil B. de Mille with these scales in the studio

Lot Essay

These scales have a significant role in the scene in Moses' pavilion where Sethi faces him with accusations of treason suggesting that he is currying favour with the slaves by giving them temple grain and one day's rest out of seven. Prince Rameses places weights in one scale pan to signify each accusation, Moses puts a brick in the other scale pan outweighing the weights of accusation saying A city is built of bricks. The strong make many -- the starving make few -- the dead make none....
