NORTHERN SONG-JIN DYNASTY (960-1234)

Dark brown or black-glazed stoneware vessels with ribbed decoration appear to have been made in several kilns in northern China. Compare a slightly larger wide-mouthed jar (25.4 cm. high) of this type, from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Janos Szekeres, illustrated by R. D. Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown-and Black Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Cambridge, 1996, pp. 174-9, no. 61.
